📆 Reflecting on 2023, Preparing for 2024

Newsletter

Merry Christmas Eve!🎄

I hope everyone has found time for rest, relaxation, and spending time with the people that are important to you💙.

It is hard to believe that 2023 is almost over and 2024 is right around the corner! Lately I’ve been reflecting on the past year while also looking forward to the new one.

2023 was filled with changes for me. I finished my fellowship🎓, moved to Arizona🏜️, started my new attending job👨🏽‍⚕️, and became board certified✅...and that was just the past 6 months!

For me (and I'm sure many of you) this has been a year of navigating new experiences and learning a lot along the way.

This week I wanted to share three lessons from 2023 that I am confident can be taken in 2024 and beyond💫.

  1. Expanding your experiences outward can expand self-discovery inward. I am the type of person that gets very comfortable with routine, but in 2023 I tried to change that. From traveling to new places to trying completely new activities🏔️, I found myself not only enjoying bursts of spontaneity but also bringing some of those moments back into my everyday life. For those of us with a lifestyle that centers around medicine day in and day out, this became refreshing and is something I hope to keep up🤗.
  2. You have to take the leap or else you'll make the excuse. This newsletter and this entire website are the embodiment of this idea. I have wanted to create a website for years but between residency, studying for exams and other life commitments I always found a reason to put it off🤷. That was until I sat down, locked in, and went for it. If there is something that you share similar feelings about, you owe it to yourself to commit and follow through...you never know what could be waiting for you on the other side☀️.
  3. If you don't respect your time, no one else will. This has been a gamechanger for me. Everyone is searching for a perfect balance between commitments to work, friends, family, and so much more. We want to give our attention to everything and we don't want to let anyone down. But if you try to do everything and you say yes to anything, you may end up accomplishing nothing. Setting boundaries and prioritizing the things that truly matter is easier to manage and far more fulfilling.

Now it’s your turn👈🏼! What changes or transitions have you had in 2023? What did you learn from those experiences? What are your goals for 2024 and how can you use this new found wisdom to help you achieve them?🤔

Answering these three simple questions can uncover a great deal of useful information. Before the year is over, I hope to sit down and ponder these questions more deeply (side note: for any Notion users, I found this lovely Year in Review template that I plan on using).

There will not be a Sunday Morning Rounds newsletter next week, so I hope everyone has an amazing holiday season and I look forward to creating more amazing content in 2024!🥳

💚 Something I love: My new InnoGear Oil Diffuser. I love things that help elevate my workspace and recently made the switch to this ceramic oil diffuser. The design is elegant, the ring light is soothing, and the misting itself lasts up to 10 hours! It's perfect for a long work day or study session.
