🛜 Perfecting Your Virtual Residency Interview Setup

Medical Students

A couple weeks ago, we talked about tips for virtual residency interviews. At the top of that list was optimizing your space, i.e. making sure you have a high quality computer/desk setup to maximize performance for interviews🧑🏻‍💻.

Today let's take a closer look at that🔎.

As we said before, a virtual residency interview means sitting at a desk and staring at a computer for long periods of time 🖥️. While some of us do this every single day😅, it can be a little bit different when you have to be "on" the entire time and there are higher stakes. So what can you do to set yourself up for success?

First things first, the overall environment is key🗝️. Making sure you have a quiet space and a reliable internet connection are a must. Don't forget other important factors like putting your phone on silent📱, locking up pets🐶, and ensuring child care to make sure unexpected interruptions don't occur👶.

Next, we can focus a little more on ergonomics and tech. A comfortable chair is a good idea considering you'll be sitting in it anxiously for a little while😅. I highly recommend investing in a laptop stand to boost your laptop up to eye level👀. This will not only feel more comfortable but can allow for a more natural and engaging conversation with interviewers🫱🏻‍🫲🏻. While many laptops nowadays have a built-in webcam and microphone, be sure to upgrade if you have any concerns about performance🎙️.

To round out your virtual interview setup, let's talk aesthetics🦋. Take a look at your Zoom background to make sure there is nothing that could be distracting, awkward, or controversial👺. While we want to avoid these types of items, it's completely okay to have artwork or something interesting/quirky that could spark conversation🖼️. Also keep in mind that the interviewer can't see what's in front of you, so it can be nice to have a lovely candle 🕯️ or a motivational note📝, so long as you aren't focusing on it during the interview. One side note when it comes to Zoom is that while virtual backgrounds are an option, I typically avoid them because they can cause blurring or cutting off of body parts that is just...weird🫠.

By following these simple tips, you'll guarantee that your space is interview-ready and be in a better mindset come interview day knowing that you are set up for success👍🏾. Happy interviewing!
